I’ve been doing a lot of mentoring lately. Paying it forward. Sharing my knowledge. When I’m in the middle of critiquing a song I hear this inner whisper in my head that tells me ‘I’m good at this.’ That’s not bragging. It’s the truth. Of course all my thoughts are my opinion but at this point in my journey I’ve earned that opinion. It’s not necessary that a mentee agree with me but it’s worth considering.

10,000 hours.

When I was teaching I enjoyed helping college students find their voice. We examined chart-topping songs and talked about what made them rise. Was it the song itself? The production? The momentum of the artist? The right time for that song?

I don’t have answers. Just thoughts.

I’m no longer teaching for several reasons. Time. Travel. Ai. 🙄  But I kinda miss the exchange. The conversation about songs and the delicious act of writing them. The zone. Yum.

So I thought I’d get back to it on a one-on-one basis. I think they call it “consulting” 🙃. We could Zoom for an hour and talk about a song (or 2) or about the music business in general. The songwriter life.

There are no facts. Just taste.

Of course there is a certain song structure one needs to respect. And if one strays, then one must compensate in some way in order to keep the listener in the car. On the ride. Cuz it’s too easy to get out and jump in another car these days. There are so many cars.

Do you know that there are as many songs uploaded to Spotify in one day as there were songs released in the entire year of 1990 — pre-streaming? It’s true. If you’re going Pro you have to want it super bad. Alternatively you can write songs as a hobby. That’s a wonderfully cathartic option.
