I Wouldn’t Want It Any Other Way

What do you do when the industry is shut down for the summer and you had your heart set on filming some visual accompaniment (I believe it’s called a music video) to support the release of you latest single…in my case “Bitch 2.0,”  — a re-imagination of my 1997 GRAMMY nominated love-child with Meredith Brooks’?

Originally I was planning on doing something trippy or cinematic to go along with the moodier vibe. Something high-concept on a Hollywood sound stage with a professional director. I was ready to cough up the bucks too. But when Covid hit, my hands were tied.

So I reached out to a handful of friends — an eclectic mix of people in my life —  and asked for their help. Even though the world was turned on its head I knew a lot of them were still busy — looking for work, protesting in the streets, getting out the vote, planning their exit strategy 😳, home-schooling their kids, attending a virtual funeral, putting out fires (literally), running from storms! I figured if I didn’t hear back, respectfully, I wouldn’t push it. That said, enough of my pals were game to come to my rescue. Even giddy about it. In the heart of the lockdown they fired up their iPhones, sang (or danced) along to the recording and then texted me their clip.

I’m wearing a mask for the first line…because why not be true to the moment? The mask is why I hated the world that day. There’s always something you can pin that line on…although I love the world very much. And I believe in the world. And I’m choosing to have faith in it.

Seeing all the footage edited together made me smile and even though my original plans were foiled the result is more meaningful, fun and organic than any high concept on a Hollywood sound stage could have been.

I wouldn’t want it any other way.
